Abstract
“Breast cancer killed my sister who lived in Africa,” explains Philippa Kibugu-Decuir, founder and chief executive officer of Breast Cancer Initiative East Africa. “Her diagnosis came too late: she was flown to London, but the cancer had already metastasised to her liver.” Traumatised by the loss and by having to accompany her sister's body back to the Congo (Brazzaville), Kibugu-Decuir returned to Texas, USA, where she lived and worked as an educator, and joined several breast cancer support groups in her determination to find out everything there was to know about this disease.
