Abstract

We present a mean-field analysis for the properties of phases and phase transitions in ferrosmectic in lyotropic liquid crystals. The model free energy is written in terms of the orientational order parameter, translational order parameter, magnetization and micellar concentration. The phase transition from isotropic micellar ferrofluid to lyotropic ferrosmectic is of first order while the phase transitions from the lyotropic ferronematic to lyotropic ferrosmectic phase and lyotropic parasmectic to lyotropic ferrosmectic phase can be either first or second order depending on the concrete substance. The temperature and concentration dependence of the magnetic birefringence and Cotton–Mouton constant are calculated in the isotropic micellar ferrofluid phase.
