Abstract

Solanum sessiliflorum is becoming an economically important crop in many parts of South and Central America. For accurate information to be given for crop management and research, it is highly desirable to have a universal scale for describing its growth stages. This study adapted the codes of the general BBCH scale to S. sessiliflorum. Detailed descriptions of vegetative and reproductive growth, from germinating seeds to adult plants, as well as principal and secondary growth stages, are provided in a two- and three-digit decimal code. Seven out of the ten principal developmental stages from BBCH scale were described for S. sessiliflorum: germination, leaf development, branches development, inflorescence emergence, flowering, fruit development and fruit ripening. Applications of the BBCH scale for this species in both research and crop management are discussed.
