Abstract
The bark of Phellodendron chinense is a very important herbal medicine in traditional Chinese medicine. In a detailed phytochemical investigation, a new phenolic lactone, 2β,3β-dihydroxy-3α-vanilloylmethyl-γ-lactone (named as phellolactone) (1), and nine known phenolic compounds (2–10) were isolated from the bark of P. chinense Schneid. Their structures were characterized by spectroscopic methods, including IR, UV, HR-ESI-MS, NMR, and chemical transformation analysis.
