Abstract

This case report describes the treatment of three men who suffered severe phenol burns while working in a chemical manufacturing plant. Emergency room care is described, and treatment received in the burn unit at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is evaluated. The toxic action of phenol, and its effects on the human system, are explained. Based on the experience with these three patients, specific precautions are outlined for those who are in contact with phenol, and a method of treating phenol burns is presented, including a discussion of the most effective solvents.
