Abstract

Phenol adsorption on natural phillipsite from Southeastern Tenerife (Canary Islands) has been studied. Phenol adsorption is only effective on NH 4-exchanged phillipsite. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms did not adequately describe the sorption data, which were found to fit well in a single linear BET equation (developed by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller) throughout the whole equilibrium concentration range. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy has been applied to study the interaction between the active, NH 4-saturated zeolitic surface (sorbent) and the phenol molecule (adsorbate), which has been shown to be hydrogen bonding. Results show promising possibilities for phenol removal by sorption on zeolitic substrates.
