Abstract

Monitoring voltage stability is an important task for ensuring secure operation of electrical power networks. In this paper, a phasor measurement based voltage stability monitoring scheme is proposed. By using phasor measurement units and transformer tap position changes, voltage stability indices can be computed at load supply points in the operational time scale. Because this scheme is only based on phasor measurements, it is easy to be adopted in real electrical power networks and does not require any information about the system model. The effectiveness of the scheme was validated in a simple power network and also in New England and New York interconnection power system model. The practicality of the approach was further demonstrated in a real-time dynamic simulator.
