Abstract

In ferroelectric liquid crystals the orientational order fluctuations, which are of relaxational type, can be decomposed into a phason and amplitudon mode, and were observed with photon correlation spectroscopy. The phasons show no gap and have parabolic dispersion relation with the minimum at a finite wave vector. In the Sm A phase, both modes become a degenerate soft mode. Its dispersion also has a minimum at a finite wave vector. At wave vectors oblique with respect to the helical axis the phason dispersion relation splits at points qz=0 and qz=2q0.
