Abstract

The Blue Fog is a thermodynamically stable phase of chiral nematic liquid crystals with short pitch. Its structure is still unknown. One model description proposed is a quasiperiodic icosahedral quadrupole tensor field. On a mesoscopic scale the system is described by a Landau-Ginzburg-de Gennes energy functional, which we exploit to determine a complete set of phonon and phason elastic constants.
