Abstract

Phasic heart rate changes have been mainly studied in relation to attentional and task-related information processing in non-stressful experimental situations. Most studies of individual differences in autonomic activity in response to stress situations have not measured phasic heart rate responses? they have been predominantly concerned with effects of induced stress on heart rate level and other cardiovascular sympathetic indices. The present paper will discuss some methodological aspects of the measurement of phasic heart rate, some interpretations of characteristic response types, the relative contribution of changes in parasympathetic and sympathetic activity and other autonomic changes, and the potential relevance of the phasic heart rate response for studies of individual differences in cardiovascular activity during stress.
