Abstract

Detailed specific heat measurements of para-hydrogen physisorbed on graphite (Grafoil) have been performed at about 70 different coverages in the total density range below monolayer completion and at temperatures between 3 and 40 K. From the data a complete phase diagram is proposed showing several novel features, e.g., a new intermediate solid and a new reentrant fluid phase, a tricritical and a multicritical point. Analysing the specific heat critical exponent of the order-disorder transition of the commensurate √3 phase, a value of α = 0.33 ± 0.03 was found confirming the three-state Potts model. Interestingly, the phase diagram turns out to have striking analogies to that of other two-dimensional quantum system: 3He and 4He.
