Abstract

The effect of chemical substitution on the stability of structuralphases in Mn1-xZnxSiF6·6H2O fluorosilicatehexahydrates has been investigated by means of x-ray diffraction.Under ambient conditions the substitution of heavier Zn atoms for Mnatoms leads to a phase transition between two trigonal phases withthe loss of the mirror plane symmetry. It has been found thatexternal pressure and Zn doping have very similar effects on thephase stability of the fluorosilicate hexahydrates, and theestablished x-T phase diagram mirrors the generalizedpressure-temperature phase diagram for the fluorosilicatehexahydrates series. The variety of the phases found and thecharacter of the phase transitions between them are discussed interms of a qualitative model, which takes into consideration theorder-disorder processes in the material.
