Abstract

A lattice model is proposed to describe the swelling behavior of polymer gels in solution. The model is applied to polymer swelling in a binary solvent mixture as a function of solvent composition. Emphasis is placed on reproducing the discrete first-order transitions in the swelling curves that have been seen in experimental systems, and on understanding the mechanism that drives the transitions on a molecular level.
