Abstract

A simple model for the adsorption of two-component gaseous mixtures on crystalline solids is developed. This theory is based on the assumption that the adsorbed layer is neither completely localized nor completely mobile. It is shown that the model predicts various phase transitions involving two-dimensional gas, two-dimensional liquid as well as two-dimensional solid phases. The conditions for the appearance of a solid phase are discussed.
