Abstract

AbstractThe Au–Cd alloy (75 at.-%Cd) undergoes a phase transformation ɛ′ to ɛ at 540 K. The crystal structure of the low-temperature ɛ-phase is reported to be hexagonal close packed. Olander evaluated the heat of transformation to be 100 cal mol−1 under certain assumptions. However, the exact nature of the phase transformation has not been studied. The purpose of the present investigation is to determine the characteristics of the transformation, including the crystal structures and lattice parameters, and also the thermodynamic properties of both phases near the transformation temperature.
