Abstract

An intermolecular potential energy function with polarization, dispersion, charge-quadrupole, and short range repulsive contributions is incorporated into the statistical phase space description of He +−N 2 ion-molecule reactions. Statistical phase space cross sections for reactions of ions with kinetic energies less than 1 eV are adequately computed using the polarization potential alone. The inclusion of dispersion and short range repulsive terms in the interaction potential is necessary for a detailed description of the reaction cross section over a wide range of kinetic energies.
