Abstract

In this paper the kinetic theory of a dilute solution of linearly elastic dumbbell model macromolecules close to a wall is studied. Starting from the Liouville equation of classical statistical mechanics, the momentum equation for the solution and the continuity equation for the polymer species are derived. Concentrating on an attractive square wall potential, explicit expressions for the equilibrium stress tensor and polymeric mass density, respectively, are obtained. The relationship of these quantities to thermodynamic surface properties, like adsorption and spreading pressure, is derived.
