Abstract

We present experimental evidence for the instability of photogenerated charge carriers (photocarriers) against phase separation into metallic domains in the CuO 2 planes. Our results of photoinduced infrared absorption measurements on La 2CuO 4 indicate that photocarriers are inhomogeneously distributed in the CuO 2 planes, forming metallic domains which condense into the superconducting state at low temperatures with an onset at T ≈ 40K.
