Abstract

A super-absorbent polymer made from an acrylic acid copolymer is proposed as an effective thickener to prevent undesirable phase separation of disodium sulfate decahydrate (Glauber's salt). The supercooling of the thickened Glauber's salt is reduced to 3–4 °C by using a borax as a nucleating agent. Phase separation has been completely prevented by using a super-absorbent polymer with a minor decrease in the latent heat. From calorimetric measurements of mixtures of disodium sulfate decahydrate, super-absorbent polymer and borax, we find, respectively, the following latent heat, thermal conductivity, and heat capacities: 227 J/g, 0.64 W/m-K, 3.4 J/g-K in the solid state and 4.6 J/g-K in the gelled state.
