Abstract

1. 1. 14C-acetate uptake, incorporation into steroid, and 14C-steroid secretion into culture medium follows a daily cycle. 2. 2. ACTH treatment increases acetate uptake and increases steroidogenesis and secretion during the low point of the circadian cycle but depresses steroid secretion during the peak of adrenal circadian activity. 3. 3. Exogenous progesterone mimics the phase-response characteristics of ACTH; progesterone inhibition of peak secretory activity by adrenal cultures displays competitive inhibition kinetics.
