Abstract

Phase relations in the Bi2–Bi2Se3–Bi2Te3 system were determined experimentally using differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Based on the experimental results, a solid-phase equilibria diagram at room temperature, a projection of the liquidus surface, and several polythermal sections of the phase diagram were constructed. The regions of primary crystallization and phase homogeneity, types, and coordinates of non- and monovariant equilibria were determined. Continuous solid solutions along the Bi8Se9–Bi8Te9, BiSe–BiTe, and Bi4Se3–Bi4Te3 sections, as well as wide areas of solid solutions based on other bismuth selenides and tellurides, were found. The established phase diagrams can be used for the synthesis of solid solutions of a given composition and the growth of their single crystals by directional crystallization from solution-melts
