Abstract

Phase pure (00l) textured flake-type hexagonal grains of PdCoO2 are stabilized by a novel single-step molten salt route. This route is simple and does not require the use of evacuated and sealed crucibles nor the post-acid treatment inevitable in the conventional metathetic synthesis to remove the unreacted precursors. Both Le-Bail refinements of XRD patterns and the electron diffraction patterns confirm rhombohedral structure [S.G. R3‾m (166)] without any trace of impurities. Core-shell X-ray photoemission and magnetic studies reveal Co is predominantly in a diamagnetic +3 state with a small fraction Co4+ in low spin contributing to paramagnetic behaviour, which undergoes ferromagnetic transition at 25 K whereas Pd is in +1 oxidation state.
