Abstract

It is suggested that measurements and calculations of parameters of reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) oscillations for off-symmetry azimuths may be helpful in developing a better understanding of RHEED from a growing surface. The phase of RHEED oscillations for Au(111) is analyzed in detail using dynamical diffraction theory. The appearance of the phase shift is believed to be associated with Bragg diffraction preceded and followed by refraction of electrons at the surface. Experimental data for GaAs(001)-2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4 are taken from the literature and an interpretation of the measured oscillation phase is given.
