Abstract
The phase noise performance of Digital signal Processing (DSP) Processor Units (PU's) with classical block, modified block and sliding updates, are compared. Using sliding update may provide better phase noise tolerance than the block updates for large block size at the expense of much more complex DSP receiver implementation. A modified block update is proposed which in a simple way eliminates the need for phase unwrapping. In the limit of large phase noise it is advisable to avoid carrier phase extraction entirely and to rely on simple differential phase detection.
