Abstract

The example of second harmonic generation is used in an analysis of the nonlinear interaction of waves in coupled optical waveguides. New types of phase matching are suggested and these may have advantages over the phase matching mechanisms in single waveguides. The new types of phase matching are found to be common to systems in which coupled modes interact.
