Abstract

This paper considers open phase faults in the system grid-converter-motor drive and preventive measures against them. The paper analyses negative aftereffects of the single phasing and possible damage, which can be caused by the loss of phase. Then the authors present some recommendations on their minimization. This paper also presents classification of the methods for the detection of the open phase and discusses distinctive features of each group of algorithms. The authors of this paper review existing algorithms, which are based on the model-based analysis and analysis of the voltage signals, discuss their pros and cons and suggest possible area of usage for each group of methods. This paper mainly considers methods for three-phased motor drives as the most popular ones, however some methods can be extended to multiphase systems. The authors of the paper also share their more than 10 years’ experience in this field, which was obtained by developing industrial and commercial drives, and focus on the requirements of the IEC/UL 60730 safety standards, where open phase detection algorithm is one of the essential parts.
