Abstract

A systematic study on the effect of Ag powder, Ag 2O and AgNO 3 (0–25 wt.% Ag) on the phase evolution in (Bi,Pb)–Sr–Ca–Cu–O (BPSCCO) system has shown that the kinetics of (Bi,Pb)-2223 formation depends strongly on the form of Ag additive. All the three additives, in general, accelerate the (Bi,Pb)-2223 formation with widely varying rates during the first 100–150 h of heat treatment. Thereafter, the volume fraction of high T c phase deteriorates for Ag powder added sample while it stagnates in the cases of Ag 2O and AgNO 3 added samples. After prolonged heat treatment (200 h) the high T c phase fraction in silver-free sample as well as the Ag 2O and AgNO 3 added samples become almost identical. Possible reasons for the differences in phase evolution and rate of Bi-2223 formation are discussed.
