Abstract

1. The structure of the alloys of the system W-Nb-Si was studied by the methods of metallographic and x-ray diffraction analyses and by measuring the hardness and microhardness of the phases. 2. We plotted the constitutional diagram of the pseudobinary section WSi2-NbSi2 in the form of a diagram with a eutectic of WSi2 + solid solution NbSi2 containing about 60 at. % WSi2 and melting at 1860°. 3. Triangulation of the ternary system W-Nb-Si is indicated and its constitutional diagram plotted. 4. Four regions of ternary solid solutions are found and approximately outlined in the ternary system on the base of compounds NbSi2, Nb5Si3, Nb4Si, and W-Nb. 5. Alloys of the system WSi2-NbSi2 are not refractory. On heating in air to 1100–1200° they are covered with a friable film of oxides which do not prevent durther oxidation of the alloy surface.
