Abstract

Equilibrium diagrams for the binary systems PuCl/sub 3/-LiCl and PuCl/ sub 3/-NaCl were studied over the temperature range 100 to 825 deg by thermal and differential thermal analysis techniques. A single eutetic was observed in each system with no evidence of solid solution or compound formation. The eutectic occurred at 461 deg C and 28 mole% PuCl/sub 3/ in the PuCl/sub 3/-LiCl system and at 453 deg C and 36 mole% PuCl/sub 3/ in the PuCl/sub 3/-NaCl system. The melting points of LiCl, NaCl and PuCl/sub 3/ in equilibrium with an atmosphere of anhydrous HCl were 607 plus or minus 2 deg , 802 plus or minus 2 deg and 767 plus or minus 2 deg C, respectively. Within experimental error, the same values were obtained for the melting points of these salts under vacuum. (auth)
