Abstract

In this study, we report on the phase equilibria in binary blends of a flexible liquid crystal polymer with non-mesogenic rigid-rod monomers. We utilized a combination of Optical Microscopic (OM) and Differential Scanning Calorimetric (DSC) methods to determine the transition temperatures, enthalpies and entropies within the total compositions of the phase diagrams. We verified the effect of molecular geometry of rigid-rod monomers on transition temperatures, enthalpies and entropies of blends and evaluated the apparent axial ratio of polymer and entropy values of nematic-isotropic phase transition. In addition, we compared our experimental nematic-isotropic phase transition data with few early lattice model theories.
