Abstract

Three-component phase diagrams, including tie-lines, have been determined at 298.2 K for ( n-heptane + water) + methanol, + ethanol, + propan-1-ol, + propan-2-ol, + butan-1-ol, + butan-2-ol, + 2-methylpropan-2-ol, + pentan-1-ol, + pentan-2-ol, and + hexan-1-ol. The results show that the solubility of water in ( n-heptane + an alcohol) is strongly dependent on the type of alcohol. Furthermore the tie lines show that the mole fraction of the water in the water-rich layer, which forms when phase separation takes place, is also strongly dependent on the type of alcohol. The conclusions made in this work have a bearing on the water-contamination problems inherent in (petrol + alcohol) blends because the solubility properties of n-heptane are similar to that of petrol.
