Abstract

The phase diagrams in the Landau-type thermodynamic potential including the linear-quadratic coupling between order parameters p and q , i.e., q p 2 , which is applicable to the phase transition in the benzil, phospholipid bilayers, and the isotropic-nematic phase transition in liquid crystals, are studied. It was found that the phase diagram in the extreme case has one tricritical point c 1 , one critical end point e 1 , and two triple points t 1 and t 2 . The linear and nonlinear dielectric constants in the potential are discussed in the case that the order parameter p is the polarization.
