Abstract

The bounds on the phase difference between the waves reflected and transmitted by lossy structures having up-down symmetry are derived. The phase bounds are demonstrated to be sufficient to ensure physical energy properties when the lossy structure is a component of a more general optical system. The corresponding bounds which apply to lossy systems incorporating gratings or grids used in a Littrow mounting, and possessing left-right symmetry are given.
