Abstract

The experimental techniques of atom probe time of flight mass spectrometry, field emission STEM X-ray microanalysis, and electron probe X-ray microanalysis have been used to investigate the composition and stability of the various phases in alloy IN939 as a function of heat treatment and long-term exposure. The results show a need for some refinement of phase stability calculations, in particular, to take into account the incomplete partitioning of alloy elements between phases and the effects of different exposure conditions during service. The effects of segregation during casting have also been investigated.
