Abstract

We describe an experiment designed to determine the symmetry of the pairing state in the cuprate superconductors. By studying the magnetic flux modulation of a dc SQUID formed by connecting tunnel junctions on the orthogonal faces of a YBCO single crystal with the conventional superconductor Pb, we can measure the spatial anisotropy of the phase of the order parameter. Preliminary results are complicated by SQUID asymmetries, but show evidence for a phase shift of π that is predicted for the d x2 −y2 pairing state.
