Abstract

Contrary to the widespread belief that no phase observable exists which is canonically conjugate to the number operator, a selfadjoint operator is given with the right properties to be a firm candidate for the quantum phase. Its spectrum, commutation relations, uncertainty inequalities and classical limit are discussed.
