Abstract

Background: Current evidence indicates that there is an increased pharyngeal and systemic inflammation in patients with OSA. Data from a putative association between local inflammation and systemic inflammation in OSA are not available Aim: To evaluate the association between local and systemic inflammation in OSA. Methods: We prospectively studied consecutive patients referred for sleep study due to suspected OSA. Smokers and those with a BMI) > 35 kg/m2 and those with other comorbid condition other than OSA were also excluded. At baseline and after 1 year of follow-up, oro-pharyngeal lavage samples and blood samples were obtained to determine lymphocyte subpopulations and inflammatory cytokines. Results: We included 26 controls, 28 snorers without OSA (AHI Conclusion: Severe OSA showed increased pharyngeal inflammation that was not associated with coexistent systemic inflammation. The hypothesis of a potential spill-over effect was not supported by these data. Supported by: ISCIII (PI12/01275), ISCIII (PI10/02696).
