Abstract
Financial expenses for psychotropic drugs (analgetics and hypnotics included) used outside of psychiatric hospitals in the German Federal Republic are cited. The use of tranquilizers, neuroleptic and antidepressive drugs inside and outside of psychiatric hospitals is discussed. The author clarifies that the following changes in schizophrenic patients have taken place since the introduction of neuroleptic drugs: the amount of chronically hospitalized schizophrenics has become smaller whereas the number of re-admissions has become considerably bigger compared with the first admissions. The insufficient treatment of schizophrenics after their hospitalization is discussed. Indications and dosage of neuroleptic drugs in schizophrenics are discussed in regard to the author’s definition of a ’’neuroleptic threshold” (weak to strong neuroleptic potency). Clinical-experimental results of the author with 22 different neuroleptic drugs in schizophrenics are discussed.
