Abstract

Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) is a congenital condition where patients have ≥1 accessory pathways with the ability to bypass the atrioventricular node and cause ventricular preexcitation. These patients are at increased risk of arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death. Atrial fibrillation is a potentially fatal form of arrhythmia. In patients with WPW, atrial fibrillation can degenerate to ventricular fibrillation. This report provides acute care nurse practitioners with an updated outline of the diagnostic criteria for WPW and sheds some light on its pharmacotherapy.
