Abstract

Medication for depression is most effective when chosen on the basis of the patient's predominant symptoms and used in conjunction with good psychotherapy. The physician should see the depressed patient at frequent intervals and tell him what to expect from the medication he is taking. The risk of suicide in depression necessitates special caution in prescribing.
