Abstract

Receptor pharmacology is an important aspect of pain transmission and modulation. The differentiated opioid receptors and subtypes are described based on new laboratory and clinical findings. Other central peptide receptors that influence pain transmission and modulation also are described. The evolving roles of alpha sympathomimetic agonists, central monoaminergic receptor agonists and 5-HT receptor agonists in pain are discussed. Currently understood issues in both central and peripheral sensitization and in hyperalgesia are developed.
