Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the forefront cause of death globally. Myocardial infarction and stroke account for 85% of deaths from CVDs. In Romania, mortality due to ischemic cardiovascular diseases presents high values, being among the first countries in Europe regarding cardiovascular mortality. Most of CVDs can be prevented through population education campaigns that can reduce the risk factors involved (smoking, obesity, alcohol abuse, sedentarism). Antianginal pharmacotherapy includes three major pharmacological classes, such as nitrites, betablockers, calcium channel blockers (CCBs), and newer molecules (nicorandil, ivabradine, ranolazine) with complex and partially known mechanisms. Patient education has an important role in reducing ischemic events. The pharmacists can increase patient adherence and compliance to treatment by counseling. Pharmacists need to know the benefits of antianginal therapy, to recognize specific drug adverse reactions and the way in which they can be reduced, and also to prevent possible interactions with other drugs, foods or dietary supplements.
