Abstract

In vitro antibacterial, antifungal, pharmacological tests as well as chemical screenings have been carried out on 27 plant extracts from 7 plants [Antirhea borbonica Gmel., Chassalia coriaceae Verdc., Danais fragrans (Lam.) Pers., Gaertnera psychotrioides Baker, Mussaenda arcuata Poiret in Lam., Mussaenda landia Poiret in Lam., Paederia foetida L.] of the Rubiaceae. Eleven of the 27 extracts showed antibacterial properties, five showed antifungal properties while two showed potent smooth muscle relaxation and contractile properties.
