Abstract

A crude glycosidal fraction isolated from the plant Corchorus tridens L. was screened for pharmacodynamic effects using 25 tests on 6 species of animals and in vitro anti-microbial effects. The fraction was found to depress the central nervous system, lower the blood pressure and stimulate smooth muscles. Some of these actions are probably mediated through cholinergic mechanisms. The fraction did not exhibit diuretic, anti-ovulatory, anti-bacterial, antifungal, or anthelmintic effects.
