Abstract

Abstract PPP-Trimethyl-2-(2,6-xylyloxy)ethylphosphonium bromide (PTM10; phospho-TM10), the phosphorus analogue of xylocholine (TM10), has been found to possess local anaesthetic, α-adrenoceptor and ganglion blocking properties. It also shows a blocking action at the neuromuscular junction but has no detectable adrenergic neuron blocking properties. The relation of these results to the ‘cholinergic link” hypothesis of Burn and Rand is discussed.
