Abstract
C YTOSINE ARABINOSIDE (I-B-D-arabinofuranosylcytosine, ara-C) is one of the most effective agents in the treatment of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML).lm4 The combination of ara-C at conventional doses (100 to 200 mg/m*) with an anthracycline has led to a marked improvement in remission induction5-’ Variations in administration have demonstrated that this agent is also effective at both low (20 to 30 mg/m2) and high (2 to 3 g/m’) doses. The mechanisms of action of ara-C and the basis for selectivity against leukemic cells, however, remain unclear.
