Abstract
SUMMARY Pharmacologic management is an important adjunctive treatment for myofascial pain and dysfunction. A wide selection exists of chemical agents that can be used to block reception, transmission, and perception of pain and to produce muscle relaxation. Knowledge of the biochemistry of pain and the pharmacologic action of specific drugs allows the most appropriate choice of medication. Understanding the patient in terms of compliance and tolerance of side effects leads to successful management with pharmacologic therapy.
