Abstract

For optimum antimicrobial therapy, knowledge of pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) drug properties is essential. Pharmacokinetic properties are dependent on drug and host factors, whereas pharmacodynamic properties are drug and pathogen specific. Antimicrobials behave differently depending on the population involved, and significant groups are the critically ill and the obese. Knowledge of the minimum inhibitory concentration and the drug level are strong predictors of clinical success. Therapeutic drug monitoring and antimicrobial susceptibility testing should be part of clinical management of infections.
