Abstract

Pharmacognostical studies of Dioscoreophyllum cumminsii and Dioscoreophyllum volkensii (Menispermaceae) show that both species are structurally similar. However, slight differences exist between the two species with respect to leaf sizes, type and abundance of trichomes. The leaves and stems of both D. cumminsii and D. volkensii contain the quaternary alkaloids magnoflorine, jatrorrhizine and columbamine. Palmatine is found only in the leaves and stems of D. volkensii. The identities of these compounds were established on the basis of various colour reactions in visible and UV light, co-chromatography with authentic samples, and various TLC solvent systems.
