Abstract

Ayurveda has a rich treasure of medical preparations and formulations. The scientific procedures of drug preparations have specific action, site and mode of action. Mashi kalpana is one of the drug preparation methods explained in Ayurveda. This study aims to find the difference between Latakaranja Mashi extracted by three different methods using analytical tests. Latakaranja seeds [Caesalpinia bonducella (L.) Roxb. Family: Fabaceae (Caesalpiniaceae)] were burnt in sarava (sealed mud casserole) by three different methods to obtain Batch-A drug sample (incineration method), Batch- B drug sample (combustion method), and Batch- C drug sample (only internal kernels incineration method) to obtain the carbonized form. The best Mashi form was analyzed using various macroscopic tests, solubility tests and physicochemical analysis of all three samples. The best Mashi was extracted through the incineration method of Batch-A drug sample with black color, 33.70 % ash value, 3.739 % of acid insoluble ash, pH of 9.3 and specific gravity of 1.081. This sample is soluble in water and alcohol.
